Our Services

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment

Osteopathic manipulative treatment is a structural treatment using techniques that mobilise your joints and release restrictions in your fascia, muscles and ligaments. Osteopathic Practitioners use many gentle techniques and are a safe choice for all ages and stages – from newborns to the elderly. These techniques reduce pain, help with alignment and mobility and decompress blood vessels and nerves.

Craniosacral Therapy

Osteopathic Practitioners have learned to palpate a craniosacral rhythmic motion of approximately eight to twelve cycles per minute. This movement is present throughout life and can be felt anywhere in the body. It is believed to be caused by the production and re-absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and other fluids in the brain and spinal cord. Craniosacral therapy can have a profound calming effect on the nervous system.

Visceral Manipulation

There are basically two motions: mobility and motility. Mobility is an organ’s ability to move in response to the body in motion, such as during walking or in response to the movement of the diaphragm during respiration. Motility is an inherent motion of the organ and is a memory of the spiraling movements that occur during embryological development. Visceral Manipulation can improve organ function and digestion.

Pregnancy & Children

Osteopathic treatment during pregnancy is safe and gentle. It can help dissipate the pain and discomfort of postural changes that occur in the second and third trimester with the increasing weight of your developing child.

Osteopathy can really help infants and children. Children are not nearly as resilient to injury as we think, and strains and structural tensions early in life become incorporated into the growing body. “As the twig is bent so it grows.”

We want you to heal, to experience again the joy of easy fluidic movement in your body and get you back in your game – whatever that game may be. Be it pushing that double stroller up that hill or pushing yourself to reach your personal best...
if you need help surviving the marathon of life, Osteopathy just might be the answer.

Do you feel like some therapies target your sore area without assessing you as a whole? Have you tried other therapies but are still in pain or discomfort?

Osteopathic Practitioners use gentle tests and techniques to find and treat the root causes of your dysfunction. We don’t chase the symptoms.

We are very successful at reducing or eliminating pain, improving mobility and function, and getting you back doing the activities you love.

With sensitive knowing hands, a deep knowledge of anatomy and its fascinating interconnections, we can release tensions deep in your body and help you find centre again.

When you receive osteopathic treatment at the Vancouver Osteopathy Centre, rest assured that you have 100% of our attention. We treat only one client at a time.

Some osteopathic techniques target deep relaxation. A deep breath is taken and the autonomic nervous system begins to calm – so rare these days with life's increasing stress and demands.

Not only are people waiting to exhale, they seem to be waiting to inhale.

Osteopathy is like a breath of fresh air.

Deirdre Byrne

The Vancouver Osteopathy Centre, opened in 2008 and was the first osteopathic clinic in the City of Vancouver. The owners, Caryn Seniscal and Deirdre Byrne, both have over 30 years’ experience as healthcare practitioners. Caryn and Deirdre have established excellent reputations and carefully selected the practitioners working with them. All Osteopathic Practitioners at the Vancouver Osteopathy Centre are members of Osteopathy BC, having met the educational guidelines for manual osteopathy as set out by the World Health Organization. The educational requirement is four years’ full-time study from an accredited school, or the equivalent part-time study for previously licensed health professionals in Canada. Please note, we are not Osteopathic Physicians.

There are therapists in BC calling themselves Osteopathic Practitioners who have studied for a year or less. These therapists do not meet the educational requirements of Manual Osteopathy, nor do they qualify for membership in Osteopathy BC. If you book a treatment at the Vancouver Osteopathy Centre, you can be confident you’re seeing a qualified professional.

Osteopathic treatment is so effective that techniques like cranial, visceral and muscle energy techniques have found their way into other therapies under the names craniosacral therapy and visceral manipulation. These techniques were discovered and developed by osteopaths. Osteopathic Practitioners study these techniques for years as part of our curriculum, and at more advanced levels in continuing education programs. We’re the real thing.
